  • Why the New Bern Post?
A few months ago, our family had the honor of welcoming Historian David Cecelski to our family farm in Pamlico County. Dr. Cecelski has authored numerous award-winning books including one of my favorites The Fire of Freedom: Abraham Galloway and the Slaves’ Civil War. It was an amazing day sharing the history of my maternal family and hearing his wisdom and insights about the local history of this region. As hours passed, Dr. Cecelski narrowed our discussion to an interesting piece of my family’s history. It centered on my maternal grandfather, Frederick Douglas Fisher who was born in 1891 and his love for education but most specificallyRead More →

  • New Bern Post Undergoing Major Changes

Since the transition occurred, we have been amazed by what we have experienced. There have been community members contacting us to be citizen journalists, people having problems reaching out and needing assistance for justice, story leads, and so much more. We have been working behind the scenes with state and national partners to see how to best develop the work that Randy started and to do it justice.Read More →
  • A Tale of Two Countries
Marva Fisher Baldwin September 30, 2021 One of the world’s most noted literary works begins with one of the longest opening sentences. It reads: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of  despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all goingRead More →

  • State thinks Downtown, historic neighborhood need as much help as Trent Court
A tax credit opportunity zone designated for New Bern due to a purported high level of poverty is mostly made up of a decidedly well-to-do historic neighborhood, the city’s thriving downtown, and two major city parks. The zone also includes the New Bern Grand Marina, home port of some of New Bern’s nicest yachts. The zone also includes Trent Court and a rundown section of town between downtown and the Riverside Historic Neighborhood. “I believe we initially learned of the Opportunity Zones program from Alderman Jameesha Harris,” Colleen Roberts, New Bern public information officer, told the Post in an email.  “She was briefed about theRead More →

  • Illegal shooters trashing public lands in Craven County
The U.S. Forest Service called a 120-day halt to target shooting throughout Croatan National Forest on July 13, 2015. Then that restriction was extended, so it remains in place today, more than three years later. That hasn’t prevented do-it-yourself shooting ranges from continuing to riddle the landscape and pose a public safety hazard throughout the 160,000-acre public forest near New Bern. The illicit form of recreation often leaves damaged trees and plant life in its wake. And garbage. Lots of garbage. Everything from bullet-pocked refrigerators and propane tanks to beer bottles and auto parts. The rubbish and bullet holes have left a scar onRead More →
