The improv comedy group Walk-In Bathtub will perform an 8-hour “Improv-A-Thon” fundraising event for New Bern Civic Theater (NBCT) Saturday, Oct. 10, from 4 p.m. to midnight.
Since the pandemic, NBCT has been forced to postpone or cancel 13 events, which provide 80 percent of the theatre’s revenue. Saturday’s marathon fundraising performance will open NBCT’s stage for the first time since closing in March.
“The coronavirus has shown us how unpredictable life can be,” said Angelina Doyle, NBCT executive director. “So when Governor Cooper’s Phase 3 announcement showed that we could open with limited performances, we figured an improv show where anything could happen was probably the best way to start things up again.”
Walk-In Bathtub performances include a series of unscripted games that are inspired by audience suggestion and reminiscent of the popular TV show “Whose Line is it Anyway?” Team members must create scenes and act out suggestions from the audience without the help of a script–or dialogue in some cases–that result in comedic and unexpected scenarios.
In addition to all proceeds from ticket sales being donated to NBCT, Improv-A-Thon is held in conjunction with the theatre’s MightyCause Fundraising campaign. Sponsored by Gannett Media Corp (An Affiliate of USA Today) and administered by MightyCause, donations made through the “A Community Thrives” fundraiser challenge will qualify NBCT for grants ranging from $2,500 to $100,000.
The challenge ends at noon, Oct. 16 and all donations made to the campaign, regardless of the grant, will come to NBCT. Gannett Media Corps, USA Today, or MightyCause do not take any part of the donations the community contributes.
All donations to NBCT can be made through the MightyCause link: acommunitythrives.mightycause.com/story/Nbctmissinglivetheater.
Improv-A-Thon will include eight consecutive 45-minute performances from 4 p.m. to midnight with a limited capacity of 25 audience members per show. Tickets are $5 each and all proceeds will be donated to NBCT. To purchase tickets, visit https://www.newberncivictheatre.org/improv-a-thon
Tickets also available 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday at the daytime box office, located at 412 Pollock Street in downtown New Bern and by phone at 252-633-0567. Tickets will be available at the door this Saturday on a first-come, first-served basis.
Members of the public who are unable to attend are encouraged to support the theatre this week through the MightyCause challenge.
Masks are required to attend and all staff, performers, and guests will be screened prior to entering the building with touchless thermometers. Auditorium, lobby and bathrooms will be fully sanitized between each show and hand sanitizer stations will be available in the lobby. To allow for the disinfectant to set, seating will open five minutes before each show begins. Concessions will not be available and NBCT will not be allowed to sell alcohol during the show per the Governor’s Executive Order.
All donations made to A MightyCause challenge are separate and must be made through amightycause.com website to be counted for the A Community Thrives Challenge.
