The Rotary Club of New Bern’s Sham-Rockin’ 2020, A St. Patrick’s Celebration, scheduled for Friday, March 13, has been postponed, according to club president Clayton Cheek.  

In a statement , Cheek said, “This was difficult decision to make this morning. But government and health officials all over the U.S. have cautioned residents to avoid attending large events that would put them in contact with the spreading Coronaviris.  

“Rotary International’s primary focus is disease prevention and treatment (over 1 billion people in the world suffer from neglected diseases such as COVID-19). By postponing, Rotary is setting a good example of social responsibility during this pandemic.”

Sham-Rockin’ 2020 is the club’s primary event to raise funds to support worthy projects in the area and the world through grants.  In the last 12 years, The Rotary Club of New Bern has granted $441,000 to worthy causes within our area and around the world through fund raisers like Sham-Rockin’.

OTHER INFORMATION:

The Rotary Club of New Bern board of directors has elected to cancel Sham-Rockin’ 20 scheduled for March 13 at the North Carolina History Center due to the increasing risks of the coronavirus. This decision comes after the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services recommended canceling or postponing events of mass gathering events that may draw high-risk persons.

We apologize and are disappointed that we cannot host this event for our community, but the potential public safety risks associated with hosting the function is increasing by the minute.
