Two unidentified Craven County residents died this week of COVID-19-related reasons, bringing the October death toll to 17 and tying the record for most deaths in a month set in August.

Craven County reached 2,122 confirmed COVID-19 cases today, jumping past 2,100 cases. The county has been adding about 100 new cases every three to four days.

With some Craven County Schools students resuming in-class instruction once a week starting this week, doctors are on the lookout for an increase in spread in Craven County.

So far this school year, 20 staff members and 8 students have tested positive for COVID-19:

  • Oct. 19 one staff member
  • Oct. 16 one staff member
  • Oct. 12 one staff member
  • Oct. 7 two staff members
  • Oct. 5 two staff members and two students
  • Oct. 2 one staff member and one student
  • Sept. 30 three staff members
  • Sept. 22 one staff member
  • Sept. 16 two staff members
  • Sept. 14 one student and two staff members
  • Sept. 9 four students and three staff members
  • Aug. 30 one staff member
  • Aug. 28 three Creekside Elementary employees (the only instances where Craven County Schools identified

The students who contracted the virus are thought to have been members of athletic teams that have been holding practices. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services reported that the New Bern High School football team had an outbreak affecting five team members, which would account for five of the eight students who have tested positive for COVID-19.

There are 196 active cases in Craven County, and 13 Craven County residents are hospitalized. Out of the 2,122 confirmed positive cases, 1,869 have recovered.

Of the 2,122 cases, 24 have been related to out of state travel, 414 are from community transmission, 1,400 are a direct contact with a previously confirmed positive case, 152 are still being investigated, and 132 are unknown.
