After decades of presence in New Bern starting downtown and ending at Twin Rivers Mall, JC Penney is closing this summer.

The company blog announced it Thursday.

“Following a comprehensive review of our retail footprint, JCPenney made the difficult decision to close 154 stores. We will continue to operate the majority of our stores and our flagship store, jcp.com, to ensure our valued customers continue to have access to the products and brands they need and want. Please see below for a list of closing locations.”

The loss will be a blow to Twin Rivers Mall, where JC Penney is one of two anchor stores. The other is Belk.

JC Penney had been among retail store operators most struggling amid new market conditions only worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic.

It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on May 15.

CNN reported, “The pandemic’s hit on sales was the final blow to a 118-year-old company struggling to overcome a mountain of debt. When the pandemic hit, JCPenney, like many other businesses, was forced to temporarily close stores.”

The closure of the New Bern store will be completed later this summer.
