Dear Editor: Many are hoping and praying that Craven County Schools reconsiders Plan C for their reopening plans.
Currently the plan, Plan B, is for hundreds of students and almost all adult staff to be inside the school buildings daily. This is unquestionably dangerous. Craven County certainly has community spread and our numbers are likely very underreported (like elsewhere).
Many counties’ school boards, including Lenoir, Duplin, Wake, Dare, Mecklenburg, Wilson, Brunswick, Hyde, Currituck, Bertie, and Beaufort have voted to start the first month or quarter with virtual education (Plan C).
Some of these counties changed earlier plans of starting in person and now decided it’s better and safer to start virtually with Plan C. Their adjustments will save lives!
I’m worried for my community. I’m worried for teachers, custodians, bus drivers, cafeteria staff and all those adults who will be around hundreds of kids inside a building daily during a Pandemic. I fear this could end very badly and is an incredibly large risk to take.
I can’t even imagine some of our teachers dying from catching COVID in the schools! And it’s certainly possible that some of our students could get very sick as well. My heart aches just thinking about this!
I’m hoping Craven County will rethink their school openings and shift to Plan C to help keep our community safe during these unprecedented times.

Note: The Board of Education approved the Roadmap to Re-Open Plan giving parents a choice to choose what is best for their child for the 2020-2021 school year.
The 2 choices for families are Plan B or the Craven LIVE Virtual Academy.
Under Plan B, students will rotate between face to face instruction and remote learning following the safety requirements established by the NC Department of Health & Human Services. These protocols include:
All students and teachers wearing masks, social distancing, and frequent hand washing. This option is for families who are ready for their child to return to school.
Craven LIVE Virtual Academy will be a fully online virtual option for our students who would like to receive instruction in a remote setting. This option will be available for all students in grades K-12.
