Friday, Nov. 27, 2020, kicks off the holiday season in Downtown New Bern with Bear Merry Christmas and Christmas on Craven Street-Downtown New Bern-Open House events.

In light of COVID-19, this year’s Beary Merry Christmas is called A Beary Safe and Magical Christmas in New Bern.

Beary Merry Christmas, a Downtown New Bern staple for years, will be Friday, Nov. 27 and 28 at Santa House in Bear Plaza on Middle Street and throughout Downtown New Bern.

Beary Merry events

Friday, Nov. 27: Beary Merry Christmas Kickoff

  • Santa arrives in Bear Plaza
    (Visits are reservation only at
  • Snow in Bear Plaza (6 p.m.-8 p.m.)
  • Community Tree Lighting in Union Point Park (6 p.m.)
  • Mistletoe Market begins in Talbot Lot (11 a.m.-8 p.m.)
    (Food vendors and holiday shopping vendors, DJ at 5 p.m.)
  • Religious Community Services Food Drive (5 p.m.-7 p.m.)

Saturday, Nov. 28: Small Business Saturday

  • Sidewalk sales and shop small incentives (10 a.m.-8 p.m.)
  • Snow in Bear Plaza (6-8 p.m.)
  • Mistletoe Market (11 a.m.-8 p.m.) Food vendors and holiday shopping vendors
  • Live entertainment
  • Horse drawn carriage and wagon rides (4-7 p.m.)

  • Flotilla & Air Show on Dec. 5

Craven Street events

The business owners on Craven Street have worked in collaboration with Beary Merry Christmas to provide additional Holiday events on Craven Street.

Craven Street merchants will be offering additional holiday events starting on Friday, Nov. 27, 2020. Go to the event page for information.

Christmas on Craven events include:

  • Virtual video tour of shops being decorated.
  • Outdoor display at Isaac Taylor Garden.
  • Photo prop on the alley next to Accidental Artist.
  • High School carolers
  • Open House at Mitchell’s Hardware and a street-wide Open House 4-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27.
  • Fresh hot doughnuts at the Grill at Prohibition from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 28.
  • Small Business Saturday, Nov. 28, there will be sidewalk sales all along Craven Street.

Other Craven Street events

On Dec. 5 from 1-3 p.m., George Oliver and Strung Together will be performing on Craven Street.

On Friday, Dec. 11, Craven Street will be part of ArtWalk in Downtown New Bern.

On Sunday, Dec. 13 from 1-4 p.m., Bonny Shirk of Fuller Music will be performing a Christmas music recital.

And then on Saturday, Dec. 19, from 1-3 p.m., there will be a live guitar performance on Craven Street.
