Dorian-spooked Bike MS organizers have canceled this weekend’s event in New Bern.
Catherine Lott, manager of event production at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, said in an email to local event partners:
“Unfortunately, due to Hurricane Dorian, we had to make the difficult decision to cancel our 2019 Bike MS: Historic New Bern. We’re working this evening on outreach to all of our event partners, vendors, participants and volunteers. I do know that someone on our staff is working on reaching out to hotels, but please feel free to share this news with your hospitality partners.
“Please stay safe this week; we’re all thinking of our friends in New Bern and hope the storm passes without trouble,” she said.
The Bike MS: Historic New Bern Ride 2019 was scheduled for Sept. 7 and 8.
The event in New Bern annually draws several thousand cyclists, along with festival vendors. It is among the largest events in Downtown New Bern each year, although it is dwarfed by MumFest, which is held in October.
The event is based at Union Point Park at the intersection of East Front and South Front streets, an area that is always among the first to flood in New Bern.
According to published reports, organizers were concerned about the condition of Union Point after the storm, on top of existing concerns about limited available hotel space in Downtown New Bern.
The DoubleTree by Hilton hotel, the largest in the city and the city’s only full-service hotel, has been closed since Hurricane Florence.
Any remaining hotel rooms in New Bern would undoubtedly be quickly filled following a hurricane by recovery workers.
