Two unidentified Craven County residents died of COVID-19-related causes on Monday, bringing the running total of fatalities from the deadly virus in Craven County to 50.
The county passed the 1,900 mark on Saturday. It has added 100 new cases each three days for the past nine days.
In total, Craven County has 1,939 confirmed COVID-19 cases as of 11 a.m. on Oct. 13, 2020. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, which keeps its own statistics, reports that Craven County has 2,003 cases as of today.
There are 308 active cases and 23 Craven County residents are currently hospitalized.
Craven County Schools resumes in-class instruction next week. Local physicians are concerned about the potential increase in COVID-19 cases that could cause, on top of flu cases as the county enters flu season.
One physician reported people have tested positive for both COVID-19 AND flu during the past few weeks.
Among those who have been afflicted with COVID-19 are Craven County Commissioner Johnnie Sampson and the Rev. Ethel Sampson, and New Bern Post editor Randy Foster.
During a discussion by the Craven County Board of Commissioners about reopening public schools, Commissioner Sampson was the only board member to speak against reopened schools.
Meanwhile, out of the 1,939 confirmed positive cases, 1,581 have recovered.
The number of cases caused by community spread has increased to 376 cases, although another 85 are under investigation and 131 are classified as unknown. There have been 1,325 cases due to direct contact with a previously confirmed positive case.
The 49th Craven County resident died on Monday, Oct. 12, 2020. The individual was tested for COVID-19 on Oct. 5, 2020 and resulted positive on Oct. 6, 2020. The death was reported to the Craven County Health Department on Oct. 12, 2020.
The 50th Craven County resident died on Oct. 12, 2020. The individual was tested on Sept. 22, 2020 and resulted positive on Sept. 24, 2020. The death was reported to the Craven County Health Department on Oct. 13, 2020.
Both individuals had underlying health conditions. To protect the privacy of each individual’s family, no further information about the individuals will be released.
