A dog that started off life in a dog fighting ring in Canada is now helping law enforcement in Craven County.
Nibbles was rescued from a dogfighting ring in Canada and rehabilitated by Throwaway Dog Project. He was then trained in drug detection and was donated to the Craven County Sheriff’s Office earlier this year and assigned to K9 Deputy McCaw.
Nibbles detected drugs in a car after its driver was stopped for a license check on Simmons Street in New Bern on Monday.
During the vehicle search, deputies discovered a backpack containing approximately 9.5 grams of heroin and 17 grams of cocaine along with scales and syringes.
Quanterrio Mejias of Colonial Way, New Bern was charged with trafficking in heroin and possession with the intent to sell and deliver cocaine. He is being held in the Craven County Detention Center with bail set at $500,000.
Nibbles went home that night with Deputy McCaw, a long way from Canada and an even longer way from life in a dog fighting ring.
K9 Nibbles is breaking record numbers month after month with taking suspected criminals and drugs off the streets but another recent bust was huge and involved drug trafficking.
‘Our boy needed a second chance. It took a village to make this happen and we couldn’t be more proud of him!” Throwaway Dogs Project said on its Facebook page.
